DISCLAIMER: I don't feel the same giddy excitement and anticipation of the holiday season this year. I'm still struggling dealing with the loss of my life. What's usually my most favorite time of the year feels depressing and dull. I'm still sifting through my feelings of anguish, grief and guilt. I feel guilty trying to pretend like everything is fine and normal again. Each passing day it gets easier for this "new normal" to become my normal. And I hate that! I don't want to get used to this! But I know I can't act and feel this way forever. At some point, I have to move on. The guilt still eats away at me but I'm going to try to find joy and honor my puppy's memory by doing something that has always brought me joy before (which is this, my holiday musical challenges). It's going to be hard but I'm going to try. For him.

I don't know about you, but it's been a looooong year. To me, it's felt longer than 2020. It's been an extremely difficult year for me (I would go as far as saying it's been even worse than last year) and I feel drained. Thank goodness for music! It keeps me going, even on days when all I can manage is to get myself dressed. Christmas music is so nostalgic to me. It feels like a big warm hug! 

I think these two songs off of Pentatonix's festive new holiday album Evergreen are the perfect way to kick off this final month of the year and the Christmas season! The first song, It's Been A Long, Long Time rings so true for me this year! I don't know how this Christmas will go for me (it will be difficult) but I'm hoping to experience some Christmas cheer throughout the month (and I'm sure I will). It will just be...different. I think this song choice was such a clever way to start the album off with (and to announce their Christmas tour!). I don't think this is originally a Christmas song but Pentatonix has a way of making just about ANY song work as a Christmas song! And let's be honest, waiting a whole year for Christmas to come back around always feels like a long, long time.

This second song is a classic and I was SO excited when I saw it on the track list. I have to be honest, but the first time I listened to their cover...I didn't love it! 😬 It was the first time I have EVER felt "meh" about a CHRISTMAS song from PENTATONIX!! It's grown on me a lot over the past several weeks since that first listen and I find myself enjoying it more and more each time. I just wasn't expecting such a laid back vibe. This whole album has a different vibe to it overall...it's more chill and relaxed then their previous works have been but it's still a masterpiece and I'm SO grateful they have continued their tradition of releasing Christmas music every. single. year! I hope they NEVER stop!!

Song: Siren Call Artist: Hanson This song is off of Hanson's Fan Club EP: Loud (2016). I have been slightly obsessed with this haunting song as of late. This song is about dealing with depression ( Zac Hanson even said so ! Be forewarned, explicit language is used in this video. I'm so sorry). Once I heard Zac explain the meaning and message behind this song it made so much sense to me! I have always loved it and I've always known it had a powerful message but I could never quite figure out what it was. This song is about struggling. Being weighed-down by the burdens and challenges life brings to each and every one of us.
