Grateful For Music Challenge Day 21
Song: In the Ghetto
Artist: Reba McEntire & Darius Rucker
I heard this song for the very first time this week while I was watching the CMA's. Wow! This song hit me right in the FEELS!! 😰😠Reba McEntire & Darius Rucker were PHENOMONAL!! Even though this song brings tears to my eyes, I'm posting it as my "grateful song" because this message is so important. This song makes me feel the same way the song Man in the Mirror makes me feel! It makes me want to look inside myself and seriously think of a way I can make a change. For this world! Starting in my own community. The lyrics of this song break my heart but at the same time fuel my fire for change! What can I do? I need to figure that out. This song has been on repeat in my mind. The melody is beautiful, the lyrics heart-wrenching, the message: RECIEVED. I'm so blessed to live where I do. In a safe community, with a wonderful home and family. But I'm sure that if I drive even just 15 minutes away, I will find suffering people, broken hearts and spirits, someone in need of help.
As the snow flies
On a cold and gray Chicago mornin'
A poor little baby child is born
In the ghetto
And his mama cries
'Cause if there's one thing that she don't need
It's another hungry mouth to feed
In the ghetto
People, don't you understand
The child needs a helping hand
Or he'll grow to be an angry young man some day
Take a look at you and me,
Are we too blind to see?
Do we simply turn our heads and look the other way?
Well, the world turns
And a hungry little boy with a runny nose
Plays in the street as the cold wind blows
In the ghetto
And his hunger burns
So he starts to roam the streets at night
And he learns how to steal, and he learns how to fight
In the ghetto
Then one night in desperation
The young man breaks away
He buys a gun,
Steals a car,
Tries to run,
But he don't get far
And his mama cries
As a crowd gathers 'round an angry young man
Face down on the street with a gun in his hand
In the ghetto
And as her young man dies,
On a cold and gray Chicago mornin',
Another little baby child is born
In the ghetto
And his mama cries
Studio Version - preference option
So, apparently the original artist of this song was Elvis Presley! 😲
