Jack Johnson Month Day 19

Song: Enemy
Artist: Jack Johnson, Sleep Through the Static

First off, I want to wish my incredible father a very HAPPY FATHER'S DAY! Don't be thrown by the title of this song, haha. My dad is certainly not my enemy. This song is not dedicated to him, lets get that cleared up right away! 😅 I just had to give him a little shout out! I hit the jack-pot getting this guy as my father. 💙 I love you dad!!

OK, now for the song 😉 This has become one of my favorites from this album over the years. The lyrics are so poetic yet simple. The melody is gorgeous. For me, I interpret this song as the "enemy" being ourselves. More often then not we are our own worst enemy. I don't know about you, but I say some pretty horrible things to myself that I would never even dream of saying to someone else. This song is saying how we need to love and forgive ourselves and essentially stop hating ourselves. I love this sentiment from the second verse: I put hatred in a box then I locked it, the strongest one I made. I buried it all, grew a tree without thorns and sat beneath the shade." Lock away our hatful and self-loathing thoughts and insecurities. Rise above the lies we tell ourselves ("you'll never be good enough" "you're not worthy" "you don't deserve anything" "you're ugly" etc.). Make peace with oneself. Find acceptance and self-love. It's the only way you can really love anyone else.

Thank you for listening to my TED talk 😉 Now it's time I take a piece of my own advice..."You might think I'm your enemy but that don't make you mine...And all I have now is empathy. 💕

After we spoke I had a dream that I broke
The teeth from a mouth of a snake
That I choked on the teeth
They were mine all along

I picked up the pieces when I woke up
Put them in a boat made of things that I don't want to see
I blew on the sail
Watched it drift out to sea
The further it drifted the closer it came to me
I can't explain

So I took it apart built a billion boxes
There was only one key

You might think I'm your enemy
But that don't make you mine
And all I have now is empathy
I wish that you'd stop trying
Oh, please stop lying

Stop la la la la la la la
La la la la la...

I put hatred in a box then I locked it
The strongest one I made
I buried it all, grew a tree without thorns
And sat beneath the shade

You might think I'm your enemy
But that don't make you mine
And all I have now is empathy
I wish that you'd stop trying
Oh please stop lying
Please stop la la la la la la
La la la la la...
La la la la la...
