Grateful For Music Challenge Day 8
Song: Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Artist(s): Elton John & Sara Bareilles
I discovered this song during the summer after looking up the song I'm Still Standing by Elton John after hearing Hanson's FANTASTIC cover on The Masked Singer in May! Whew! That was a mouthful. Did you follow all of that??
When I first read the title of this song I knew I had to give it a listen. I love The Wizard of Oz and anything and everything to do with it (i.e. Wicked). And luckily, I loved the song! I listened to it quite a lot but then I discovered Miss Sara Bareilles' version. HO-LY. It is SO GOOD!! It's so different from the original, it almost sounds like an entirely different song! Her version is a little slower paced and it seems to add an extra layer of depth to the lyrics. It's more serious and solemn in tone. Here is my interpretation of the song, for myself: I think of the "yellow brick road" as the "easy" path and way of life I have led thus far. I've never really challenged myself; I've never wandered too far off "the road" and explored new paths. Since starting therapy and having to explore myself and my thought process on a deeper and more emotional level, it's making me realize more and more that I have to say "goodbye to my yellow brick road" way of life. Let go of the past and move forward so I can live a more fulfilling and exciting life. So there you go. There's my two cents on that and how I interpret the song to make it apply to my life.
I love both versions of this song, I couldn't possibly pick one or the other, so I have to share them both! I have been doubling up on songs a lot the past several days... that's just more music to love! You're welcome 😊
When are you gonna come down
When are you going to land
I should have stayed on the farm
I should have listened to my old man
You know you can't hold me forever
I didn't sign up with you
I'm not a present for your friends to open
This boy's too young to be singing the blues
So goodbye yellow brick road
Where the dogs of society howl
You can't plant me in your penthouse
I'm going back to my plough
Back to the howling old owl in the woods
Hunting the horny back toad
Oh I've finally decided my future lies
Beyond the yellow brick road
What do you think you'll do then
I bet that'll shoot down your plane
It'll take you a couple of vodka and tonics
To set you on your feet again
Maybe you'll get a replacement
There's plenty like me to be found
Mongrels who ain't got a penny
Sniffing for tidbits like you on the ground
So goodbye yellow brick road
Where the dogs of society howl
You can't plant me in your penthouse
I'm going back to my plough
Back to the howling old owl in the woods
Hunting the horny back toad
Oh I've finally decided my future lies
Beyond the yellow brick road
😯😍🙌💓😭
