On the Sixth Day of Christmas....

Song: Away in a Manger
Artist: Pentatonix

And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. (Luke 2:7) ... Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. (Luke 2:12).

The manger reminds me of humble beginnings. When the Savior of the world was first brought into the world, he didn't even have a bed to lay in. There was no hospital, staffed with nurses and doctors to make sure he was healthy, safe and warm. There were no congratulatory flowers sent. No home to return to, with a fancy nursery packed-full of new clothes, toys, books and a fancy, new crib. He used what he had and that was enough. Sometimes in this world of plenty, and especially where I live, in a particularly wealthy area, it is hard not to envy the fancy trappings and goods of others. When those around me seem to have the latest in fashion, home decor, electronics, cars and beauty. When others seem to almost flaunt their excess and make you feel smaller than they are, simply because you don't have what they do. I have to remind myself how blessed I am because I have what I need and that is enough. I even have more than I need, it just may not be the latest and greatest. I may be behind a couple of years on gadgets. Or I may just be catching up.

I hope this next year, I can better appreciate every day what I do have. That I won't compare myself to others. That I will realize that what I have is enough. That I will live each day with more gratitude in my heart, because I know that I am so blessed. That it's more important to have a family who loves and supports each other and helps each other in their own small ways, than to have the newest iphone or the most stylish clothes. I hope to be more humble and remember that when the King of Kings was born on that holy night, he was in a small, dirty old stable, lying in an animal feeding trough. And although there was no palace, and fancy gifts awaiting him, there were two loving parents, a chorus of angels and humble visitors who gathered round the small manger to worship this gift of love.

Away in a manger

No crib for a bed

The little Lord Jesus lay down his sweet head

The stars in the sky looked down where he lay

The little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay

I love this sweet song because of the reminder of the tiny baby who humbly lay in that small manger,  would be our Savior. That we all have the power and potential to do great things, no matter where we are or how we began.

La da da da da da, la da da da da da
La da da da da da, la da da da

Away in a manger, no crib for His bed
The little Lord Jesus lay down His sweet head
The stars in the sky look down where He lay
The little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay

La da da da da da, la da da da da da
La da da da da da, la da da da

The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes
But little Lord Jesus, no crying He makes
I love Thee, Lord Jesus, look down from the sky
And stay by my side 'til morning is nigh

La da da da da da, la da da da da da
La da da da da da, la da da da

Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask Thee to stay
Close by me forever and love me, I pray
Bless all the dear children in Thy tender care
And take us to Heaven to live with Thee there

La da da da da da, la da da da da da
La da da da da da, la da da da

Away in a manger, no crib for His bed
The little Lord Jesus lay down His sweet head
The stars in the sky look down where He lay
The little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay

La da da da da da, la da da da da da
La da da da da da, la da da da
La da da da da da, la da da da da da
La da da da da da, la da da da
