Grateful for Music Challenge Day 17: Pocahontas

Song: Pocahontas songs
Artist: Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz

I watched one of my absolute favorite childhood films today, Pocahontas!! I adored this movie as a child and still love it to this day! I remember having Pocahontas bed sheets, books, action figure toys, Barbie dolls and my mom making me a beautiful Pocahontas cake for my birthday! The music in this film is incredible! I love it all! Every time I hear it, I have to sing along. I can't help myself! The movie and soundtrack bring back so many memories of my childhood. I remember listening to the cassette tape as a kid over and over. My sister and I would try to reenact the "battle scene" near the end of the movie, singing the parts of the white men, Indians and especially Pocahontas. I am grateful I was able to be reminded of my childhood today and to listen to the beautiful music of Pocahontas! Below are my favorite songs from the movie :)

Just Around the River Bend
This song is so much fun and and can be applied to real life! There's always something more around the next "river bend" and we need to have the courage to pursue it!

What I love most about rivers is:
You can't step in the same river twice
The water's always changing, always flowing
But people, I guess, can't live like that
We all must pay a price
To be safe, we lose our chance of ever knowing
What's around the river bend
Waiting just around the river bend

I look once more
Just around the river bend
Beyond the shore
Where the gulls fly free
Don't know what for
What I dream the day might send
Just around the river bend
For me
Coming for me
I feel it there beyond those trees
Or right behind these waterfalls
Can I ignore that sound of distant drumming
For a handsome sturdy husband
Who builds handsome sturdy walls
And never dreams that something might be coming?
Just around the river bend
Just around the river bend

I look once more
Just around the river bend
Beyond the shore
Somewhere past the sea
Don't know what for ...
Why do all my dreams extend
Just around the river bend?
Just around the river bend ...
Should I choose the smoothest course
Steady as the beating drum?
Should I marry Kocoum?
Is all my dreaming at an end?
Or do you still wait for me, Dream Giver
Just around the river bend?

Colors of the Wind
Disney classic right here! This song is beautiful and I love the lyrics! One of my all time favorite Disney songs.

You think I'm an ignorant savage
And you've been so many places
I guess it must be so
But still I cannot see
If the savage one is me
How can there be so much that you don't know?
You don't know ...

You think you own whatever land you land on
The Earth is just a dead thing you can claim
But I know every rock and tree and creature
Has a life, has a spirit, has a name

You think the only people who are people
Are the people who look and think like you
But if you walk the footsteps of a stranger
You'll learn things you never knew you never knew
Have you ever heard the wolf cry to the blue corn moon
Or asked the grinning bobcat why he grinned?
Can you sing with all the voices of the mountains?
Can you paint with all the colors of the wind?
Can you paint with all the colors of the wind?

Come run the hidden pine trails of the forest
Come taste the sun sweet berries of the Earth
Come roll in all the riches all around you
And for once, never wonder what they're worth

The rainstorm and the river are my brothers
The heron and the otter are my friends
And we are all connected to each other
In a circle, in a hoop that never ends

How high will the sycamore grow?
If you cut it down, then you'll never know
And you'll never hear the wolf cry to the blue corn moon
For whether we are white or copper skinned
We need to sing with all the voices of the mountains
We need to paint with all the colors of the wind
You can own the Earth and still
All you'll own is Earth until
You can paint with all the colors of the wind
Savages
This song brings back so many memories! My sister and I would sing this song really intense and act it out. I always wanted to be (had to be) Pocahontas! I can remember dramatically acting out the ending scene by falling down and "protecting" my fake John Smith..."NO!" :)

[Ratcliffe]
What can you expect
From filthy little heathens?
Their whole disgusting race is like a curse
Their skin's a hellish red
They're only good when dead
They're vermin, as I said
And worse

[English Settlers]
They're savages! Savages!
[Ratcliffe]
Barely even human

[English Settlers]
Savages! Savages!
[Ratcliffe]
Drive them from our shore!
They're not like you and me
Which means they must be evil
We must sound the drums of war!

[Ratcliffe+English Settlers]
They're savages! Savages!
Dirty redskin devils!
Now we sound the drums of war!

[Powhatan]
This is what we feared
The paleface is a demon
The only thing they feel at all is greed

[Kekata]
Beneath that milky hide
There's emptiness inside

[Native American]
I wonder if they even bleed

[Native Americans]
They're savages! Savages!
Barely even human
Savages! Savages!

[Powhatan]
Killers at the core

[Kekata]
They're different from us
Which means they can't be trusted

[Powhatan]
We must sound the drums of war

[Native Americans]
They're savages! Savages!
First we deal with this one
Then we sound the drums of war

[English Settlers]
Savages! Savages!

[Ben]
Let's go kill a few, men!

[Native Americans]
Savages! Savages!

[Ratcliffe]
Now it's up to you, men!

[All]
Savages! Savages!
Barely even human!
Now we sound the drums of war!

-Part 2-
[Pocahontas]
Is there nothing I can do?
Will this really be the end?
Is it only death that waits
Just around the river bend?

[Ratcliffe]
This will be the day ...
(Let's go men!)

[Powhatan]
This will be the morning ...
(Bring out the prisoner)

[English Settlers and Native Americans]
We will see them dying in the dust

[Pocahontas]
I don't know what I can do
Still, I know I've got to try

[English Settlers]
Now we make 'em pay

[Pocahontas]
Eagle, help my feet to fly

[Native Americans]
Now without a warning ...

[Pocahontas]
Mountain, help my heart be great

[English Settlers and Native Americans]
Now we leave 'em blood and bone and rust

[Pocahontas]
Spirits of the earth and sky ...

[English Settlers and Native Americans]
It's them or us

[Pocahontas]
Please don't let it be to late ...

[English Settlers and Native Americans]
They're just a bunch of
Filthy, stinking

[English Settlers]
Savages!

[Native Americans]
Savages!

[English Settlers]
Demons!

[Native Americans]
Devils!

[Ratcliffe]
Kill them!

[Native Americans]
Savages!

[English Settlers]
Savages!

[Ratcliffe+English Settlers]
What are we waiting for?

[All]
Destroy their evil race
Until there's not a trace left

[Pocahontas]
How loud are the drums of war

[English Settlers and Native Americans]
We will sound the drums of war
(Savages! Savages!)
Now, we sound the drums of war
(Savages! Savages!)

[Ratcliffe]
Now we see what comes
Of trying to be chums

[Native Americans]
Now we sound the drums ... of ... war!

[English Settlers]
Of course it means the drums ... of ... war!

[Pocahontas]
Is the death of all I love
Carried in the drumming of war? NO!

If I Never Knew You
I love this song, it's so romantic and beautiful! I'm glad it wasn't included in the movie (as it was originally intended to be) but was saved for the credits. What a perfect love song for Pocahontas and John Smith. The ending to this movie actually makes me really sad when he has to leave her :( Haha. I'm such a hopeless romantic!

If I never knew you
If I never felt this love
I would have no inkling of
How precious life can be

And if I never held you
I would never have a clue
How at last I'd find in you
The missing part of me.

In this world so full of fear
Full of rage and lies
I can see the truth so clear
In your eyes
So dry your eyes

And I'm so grateful to you
I'd have lived my whole life through
Lost forever
If I never knew you

If I never knew you
I'd be safe but half as real
Never knowing I could feel
A love so strong and true

I'm so grateful to you
I'd have lived my whole life through
Lost forever
If I never knew you

I thought our love would be so beautiful
Somehow we'd make the whole world bright
I never knew that fear and hate could be so strong
All they'd leave us were these whispers in the night
But still my heart is saying we were right

Oh if I never knew you
(There's no moment I regret)
If I never felt this love
(Since the moment that we met)
I would have no inkling of
(If our time has gone too fast)
How precious life can be...
(I've lived at last...)
I thought our love would be so beautiful
Somehow we'd make the whole world bright
I thought our love would be so beautiful
We'd turn the darkness into light
And still my heart is saying we were right
we were right

And if I never knew you
If I never knew you
I'd have lived my whole life through
Empty as the sky
Never knowing why
Lost forever
If I never knew you

Movie version. Not horrible, but I don't think it really meshed well with the scene so I'm glad they decided to omit it and just use it as the end title track.
